Traveling with children
From what age does a child pay for a ticket?
Children aged 6 and above must pay for a ticket. Children up to 5 years old travel for free, provided they do not occupy a seat.
What documents are required to travel with children and adolescents?
Birth certificate and/or official photo ID (original or certified copy) of the minor.
If accompanied by a relative (grandparents, uncles, and siblings) over 18 years old, the birth certificate of the minor must be presented to prove kinship. If not a relative, an authorization issued by the juvenile court is required; the Belo Horizonte bus station has one.
* For travel for those aged 12 and older, it is mandatory to present an official photo ID; they will not travel with just a birth certificate;
What does the law say about travel for children and adolescents under 16 years old?
Art. 1° No child or adolescent under 16 years old may travel outside the area where they reside unaccompanied by parents or guardians without express authorization.
Art. 2° Authorization for travel for children and adolescents under 16, within the national territory, is not required when:
I – It involves a neighboring area to the residence of the child or adolescent under 16, if in the same federative unit or included in the same metropolitan region; and
II – the child or adolescent under 16 is accompanied by:
- ascendants or relatives up to the third degree, with documented proof of kinship; and
- a person over 18 years old, expressly authorized by one of the parents or legal guardian, through a public deed or private document with a notarized signature; and
III – the child or adolescent under 16 travels unaccompanied expressly authorized by one of the parents or legal guardian, through a public deed or private document with a notarized signature; and
IV – the child or adolescent under 16 presents a valid passport with express authorization for traveling unaccompanied abroad.
Art. 3° Documents of authorization issued by parents or legal guardians must specify the validity period; in the absence of this, it is understood that the authorization is valid for two years.
– Proof of kinship requires the presentation of the original birth certificate or a certified copy.
– For travel for those aged 12 and older, it is mandatory to present an official photo ID (Identity Card, Passport, Work Card, etc.) THEY WILL NOT TRAVEL WITH JUST A BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
